How to Properly Care for Leather Clothing and BDSM Accessories - Complete Guide
There are thousands of discussions on BDSM websites and also on biker websites. Anyone who has ever read such a discussion finds that they end up more confused than before. Some use products from one company, some from another, some swear by pork lard based on their grandmother's advice, and many so-called experts advocate Indulona. And then another person comes in claiming they've never cleaned or treated leather in their life. All wrong!
So you go on to search further and try reputable manufacturers or sellers of luxury leather fashion. They should know what I can and cannot apply to expensive leather. And lo and behold - some don't address care at all, while others offer you such a heap of products that you're confused again.
Do you finally want to be clear about it, not underestimate anything, and at the same time not do silly unnecessary things? Let's get to it.
What is leather care?
- impregnation,
- nourishment,
- cleaning,
- storage.
Each of these points can be done complicatedly, simply, or not at all. Complicated doesn't always mean the best.
Leather Impregnation
We deliberately mention it first because it is the first process you should perform immediately on newly purchased items. This ensures perfect protection against moisture and dirt. We often hear opinions that it's unnecessary because you have it at home or in the club and you definitely won't be running in the rain with it. And certainly not in cuffs and harnesses. Beware, impregnation not only protects against rain but also against moisture penetration from the air, sweat, and other dirt. Especially during wild erotic fun, you can easily stain the leather with bodily fluids that soak into it and you will never get them out. Don't underestimate it and impregnate!
Recommended Products
Collonil Carbon Pro is an extreme impregnation that uses the latest carbon technology and has no competition in the field of material protection. It creates a breathable mesh structure on the surface that perfectly protects the leather. At first glance, it seems more expensive, but you will soon find that the opposite is true. In the case of Carbon Pro, only a single spray is enough for perfect protection. It prevents moisture and dirt penetration and makes cleaning easier. If you subsequently apply fat for nourishment, you don't have to worry. It will easily penetrate the impregnation and nourish the leather.
Leather Nourishment
Every leather product dries out over time because it loses its natural fat. Therefore, it is necessary to supply it back. Simply apply it and spread it with a soft cloth, let it soak in, and then polish with another clean cloth. The leather will be nourished, the surface beautifully supple, but not greasy. Fat is not necessary to apply to newly purchased items. They are fresh and supple on their own. However, you should impregnate them. Apply fat after several uses.
Recommended Products
Collonil Nilfett is a clear number one. It spreads very easily and penetrates the leather better than other, stiffer, products. As if it were soaking in. It is great for all types of smooth leather (see the image at the bottom of the page). Collonil Nilfett is also very effective in reviving old, dried, and hardened leather.
Leather Cleaning
You might think that a dry or slightly damp cloth is enough for cleaning. This is not entirely true because a damp cloth pushes dirt into the pores. If you want to keep the leather in good condition for the long term, definitely don't underestimate cleaning and use professional cleaning foam. Not only does it not clog pores, but it can actually draw dirt out of them. Moreover, it is developed specifically for cleaning leather surfaces and, unlike water, it protects them from cracking. After each major cleaning, we recommend treating with fat again and then spraying with impregnation. You don't have to use fat every time, but definitely the impregnation.
How to Store Leather Clothing and Accessories?
Don't look for science in it. Just be careful of the following:
- Do not store in damp places, near heating, or in sunlight.
- Do not store in a plastic bag. Plastic is non-breathable, the leather could steam up and start to mold. Metal parts could start to corrode.
- Do not unnecessarily fold larger pieces of clothing. It's better to hang them on a hanger. The hanger should not be too thin to avoid creating a sharp bend.
- Do not unnecessarily bend or break cuffs, collars, and harnesses. It's best to store cuffs and collars in a fastened state, as they are on the body.
Leather Product Care in 6 Steps:
- buy,
- try,
- spray with impregnation spray,
- enjoy the leather to the fullest,
- clean if necessary and re-impregnate,
- after some time, nourish with fat, let it soak in perfectly, polish with a dry cloth, and re-spray with impregnation.
That's all. This procedure is the same for all types of smooth leather:
- fine smooth napa,
- thick patterned napa,
- smooth split leather.
